While you're here
Hassan district holds two of the most important Hoysala temple sites in Karnataka, and the road west climbs into the coffee country around Sakleshpur.
The 12th-century Hoysala temple, carved end to end in soapstone and still in daily worship. Go early, before the coach parties.
The Hoysala capital before it was sacked. The friezes running around the base are the finest stone carving in Karnataka.
The district town - the nearest railway station, bus stand, hospitals and ATMs.
Open water with the hills behind it, and boating when the level is high. A good sunset detour on the way back from Belur.
The 17-metre monolith of Bahubali at the top of 600-odd rock-cut steps. Worth the climb, and worth starting before the stone heats up.
Coffee country and the start of the Western Ghats proper - Manjarabad Fort, the Bisle ghat viewpoint and the trek routes beyond.
